Bali 2011 -  Kuta Lombok, 15 December
Had a short ride today around the coast in an air-con car with driver.  Went up one of the worst 'roads' we've been on - driver said 'money for road, corruption'.  Could 'safely' go on the road on a scooter, but for a car - lots of threatening to go over the side from the depth and extent of ruts (the road was actually just ruts).  Got to the lookout restaurant called Ashtari though - incredible view down the coast with all the bays and beaches.  A real chill-out hippie-ish sort of place.  Didn't go further as the driver laughed when we asked if the road got any better (I think the driver - Jun - laughed a lot as he wanted to go with a smile on his face).  Ah well, we then went to some beautiful surfer beaches to the east of Kuta for a trip, met, of course, by sellers on the beaches

Ashtari restaurant to the west of Kuta Lombok - the view was incredible, the milk shakes good, the vibes right for mellow hanging, and good organic foods. If only you could actually drive to the damn place without killing yourself on the 'road'.  It was up for sale - go figure.

A portion of the view.

Part of the view from inside the restaurant.

Some old guy on the beach east of Kuta.

Some young lady on the same beach....looking the other direction.

A near 360 panorama of another surf beach to the east of Kuta Lombok.  As soon as we stopped to climb a hill to get a panorama of the area....three kids followed us up to the top of the hill.  Bracelets & such for sale, but the little girl who giggled and focused on Anne spoke great English and was very nice - persistent, but nice.

Bali 2011 - Kuta Lombok, 12 December
Well....travelling.  We had a flight from Denpasar to Lombok -specifically, MATARAM in the north west of the island.  Said that on our tickets, which we bought a week ago.  Well...we get on the Wings Air turbo-prop airplane, 1.5 hours late, fly for 25 minutes....and we're at the new international airport!  Turns out Mataram was closed two months ago, but the tickets still say Mataram!  We had set up a place to stay on the west coast nearish the airport....so rather than a two hour drive through rain and the dark we drove down to Kuta.  It's essentially just a little strip of warungs along the beach, with some lodges, homestays and bungalow hotels on the  other side of the coast road.  We're staying in a nice bungalows place, lovely gardens, small pool, air-con and a nice restaurant.  Pretty pleasant for the 225000 Rps.
I'll post some pics once I can get a better than 300-baud connection here - I've written this three times already and had it croak on me.  Ah well.

Mmmmm....beef rib flavored potato chips!
